FOR RELEASE: 7:00 PM CST, January 16, 1996
An image from the IMAX film `Cosmic Voyage' shows a scientific visualization of large scale structure and galaxy formation in the universe. Supercomputer simulations and novel visualization techniques were used in creating this picture of a vast web-like structure of interconnected tendrils, called filaments. Galaxies form along these filaments and clusters of galaxies are created where these filaments intersect. Presented to the American Astronomical Society meeting in San Antonio, TX on January 16, 1996. PHOTO CREDIT: Imax Corporation and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
FOR RELEASE: 7:00 PM CST, January 16, 1996
In the aftermath of a catastrophic collision, two spiral galaxies from a computer simulation show strongly distorted morphologies. During these collisions, much of the gas collapses to the centers of the galaxies triggering violent bursts of star formation. The long plume of gas and stars on the left is a gravitationally induced feature called a tidal tail. This image from the IMAX film `Cosmic Voyage' exemplifies the state of the art in scientific visualization and was presented to the American Astronomical Society meeting in San Antonio, TX on January 16, 1996.
